Shock of Night

 

This is a Shock of Night, a hardly seen creature of the night. They live on the fringes of the continent and are extremely protective of their young. One is lucky if one spots a mother with her Shocklets.
SoN (Shock of Night) spend 90% of their life in the air, only coming down to hunt, or nest. They will fly as high as they can then lock their wings, trusting their instinct to tell them when they get too low. Since SoN lives mostly in the troposphere, they have a much more efficient oxygen filter than we do. While they can breathe in our more saturated air, it makes them sleepy, sluggish, and heavy. If they stay for more than an hour, they will drown or have serious lung damage.
SoN have long life spans, lasting up to two hundred years. Consequently, they only become mature around forty or fifty years and will have a clutch of three or four Shocklets. Shock of Night's are social creatures and live in huge groups called Wings.
Legend has it that one family of Shock of Nights has bonded with a family of humans. Each Shocklet from the newest clutch will take a human as their partner for life, allowing him/her to ride them.
