SecondHome clothing

SecondHome (especially GrowingHope) has a very practical preference for clothes. No long capes to get snagged on, no fancy bling just hanging there, begging to be caught on a brunch — that stuff. However, they do like shawls because it gets chilly up there.

The Guard reflects this a lot. Since they live in the trees, everything has to be loose for ease of movent, but not loose enough to get in the way. The Guard's colors are green and yellow in the summer and white and blue (sometimes pale yellow) in the winter. They wear soft leather shoes that allow them to grip with their toes but still provide protection.

For binding up wounds, they have a couple strips of cloth tied to their arms or legs. Gloves are for extra grip and the belt with many pockets is for storing things that are usually natural weapons (angry bugs, spores that put you to sleep, etc.). SecondHomers are not swordsmen. They prefer bows, blow darts, staffs, and special staff/sword things that are basically two swords stuck together at the hilt.

The color of the feathers on their arrows tells you which regiment they belong to. This guy, Fralith's brother, is from the Red/Crimson/Vermillion Regiment. All his group will have red feathers while a different group will have blue, yellow, or magenta feathers.

When GrowingHope evolved from an outpost to a city, the citizens took on the basic idea of clothing from the Guard. Shawl thing, soft shoes or no shoes, strips of cloth, shorts/pants and shirt/t-shirt (never a dress unless there's a marriage or something). Everyone has a rope tied around their waist as a belt. Connected to that rope is a clip for holding things while they climb. The rope belt is for emergencies 'cause you never know when you need a good rope (especially living in the treetops).

Some people will have a small harness on their back for carrying larger things. All items will have a clip or ring to be clipped onto. Not everyone has a strip of cloth holding back their hair, but it's pretty common to see.

For jewelry or fancy stuff, girls will braid flower crowns into their hair or make cuffs out of flashy, bright colors. They have a type of earing that hooks over the top of the ear instead of through the lobe. "Real" earings are a Kenverite thing, so you'll never EVER see a SecondHomer with an earing hole. Sashes are a nice touch too. They will also paint colorful patterns onto their face for extra festivity spirit.

For boys, it's all the weaving. They'll wear belts woven from the fur of a dangerous animal they killed or a coat made out of it. They'll also paint their face; with more dashes and dots than the girls. They are fond of cuffs, ankles, and wrists, and a special kind of clasp around their neck that holds a large flower as the center piece. Flowers and pink things are not off-limits for boys. There is no color either gender cannot wear; the same goes for flowers. At least five of ten boys will be wearing some flowers at a festival.

HideAway has different preferences for clothing. Since they live in a valley, they are freer to choose dangling things. Most girls own dresses, but they are not required. Most dresses won't pass the ankles unless it's for a festival. They like sashes around the waist which usually double as a large pocket. Long sleeve shirts are commonly worn under a vest or short-sleeved shirt. Cuffs are still the fassion here too. They have developed a kind of hand-to-hand fighting that uses the cuffs as sheilds.

They have multiple kinds of fighting, each one focusing on a different aspect. All kids are taught all the fighting skills. The kids take little bits from each kind and blend them together into a unique fighting style. The styles are as diverse as flower types.

Headbands are just plain useful, so they are a part of clothing, too. In HideAway, they have sturdy shoes that have straps to keep them in place. They are almost always brown with yellow accents, though there are a few out there that are different colors.

When SecondHomers build their city beside GrowingHope, the SecondHomers who live there will probably have their own style of clothes. Unfortunately, the books don't go far enough into the future where SecondHome has a *proper* city, so I don't know much about it.
